Walking through the area and central Athens in general we were concerned about the lack of green space and pedestrian walks. Pollution, traffic, and high density were other issues of concern. We propose to link leftover open spaces inside the blocks with different sites in the city, creating a pedestrian network. We have focused our proposals on Victoria Square and the block delineated by 3rd September, Derigni, and Elpidos streets and the square. The aim of our proposal is to provide a green network that will spread into the city. We propose underground parking under the pedestrian streets that allow it. At the level of the square, we propose a green park, a lung for the city. Vegetation will protect pedestrians from the sun in the summer, and also control pollution and noise throughout the year. We have incorporated architectural devices designed to trap winds from the north, but also act as furniture for the park. Water will be important for cooling in summer and to clean the air. In winter the water will be drained and the devices will act as benches or platforms for performances. The sides of the square will continue to act as open air extensions of the coffee shops. We propose the addition of arcades to the street facades of the block at ground level to protect pedestrians from the sun in summer and from rain in winter. Empty sites and the removal of some of the abandoned buildings will provide gates to the inner courtyards. We propose the introduction of vegetation on the flat roofs; this will improve air quality and act as thermal insulation in summer. We have used the existing shafts to bring cool air in summer. |
