I n t r o d u c t i o n

The NTUA Department of Architecture in collaboration with the AA Environment & Energy Studies Programme have organized two workshops in 1997 & 1999, attended by students from both Schools; a similar event will take place this year too, between January 20-28th.
These workshops focus on the issue of sustainable urban design, with quarters of Central Athens as examples. The students are asked to make proposals for the improvement of the existing urban conditions, with major emphasis on environmental elements.
Following four days of intensive studio work, the student teams present their schemes during the last day of the workshop.
The AA students continue working on the project during their studies in London; a similar practice will be applied by the NTUA graduate students too, during the next term.
The event includes visits to buildings with special environmental features in Athens, as well as lectures on related topics by a number of experts.

In a change of scale from the two previous workshops, this year's project is focusing on building rather than urban design.
The intervention 'arena' is a couple of urban blocks in Exarchia, a dense area close to NTUA campus, shown in the aerial photo below.
The urban fabric is quite typical of central Athens, with small blocks and narrow streets between rows of apartment blocks and neo-classical houses that cover most of the ground except a back-yard at the core of each block.
The topic of the workshop is to design a new building on a selected plot, or perhaps a large scale complex on a whole block; alternatively, students may choose to refurbish an existing building (full sets of drawings are available for buildings marked as A, B & C in the photo).
The main objective is to employ design features that can improve the environmental quality of both the proposed building(s) and the surrounding area. Such features may relate to

  • energy saving,
  • heating & cooling techniques,
  • solar access & control,
  • daylight,
  • ventilation,
  • air & noise pollution,
  • building materials,
  • water usage,
  • vegetation,
  • traffic, etc.
The proposal of each team should be presented on four A3 sheets, including a brief text on the major points of the scheme.
More details on the area and the brief will be given at the beginning of the workshop.
